Just an hour away from Tokyo, Kamakura truly has it all; mountains and the sea, the beach, temples, shrines and gardens, a magical island called Enoshima and even an amazing view of Mt Fuji. I have always loved Kamakura, and after 10 years, I finally came back. 🩵✨

Here's how you can spend a perfect day in Kamakura:

🎋 Visit Houkoku-ji temple and its bamboo garden that makes you feel like walking through famous Arashiyama minus the crowds. The admission fee to the bamboo grove is ¥300, while ¥600 gets you a cup of matcha with wagashi sweets. 🍡

🚃 Ride the Enoden: Being in operation since 1900(!) this retro train will take you throughout the seaside town of Kamakura, and is the best way to get around prime sightseeing spots along the Shonan coast.

🍵 Café Yoridokoro: If you can't get enough of the Enoden (like me!) head to Café Yoridokoro that sits parallel to the tracks so you can enjoy your lunch while watching the trains go by. This spot gets very crowded with more than a 2 hour wait and you are not guaranteed seating at the seats that face the tracks. But here's a secret tip: Go when it rains. It's what we did and there was just no one there! The staff is lovely as are the food and drinks!

🌊 Visit Kamakura's beaches and Enoshima: For the ultimate experience, I highly recommend an overnight stay on Enoshima. You can even get a magnificent view of Mount Fuji from Enoshima Island if you are lucky!

Moments in Matsumoto 🍁☂️

1 + 5: Choenji 長円寺 also known as the autumn temple 🍁 It is located in Chino, about 45mins from Matsumoto. I want to thank @travelwithaude for letting me know about this stunning temple as well as giving me updates on the foliage status 🥹❤️

2 + 4 + 7: Matsumoto Castle, also known as the Crow Castle for it's black exterior. It is the only Japanese castle that has been completely preserved inside where you will be able to also visit it's stunning inside. It's my favorite Japanese castle for this reason 🏯🥹

3 + 6: Magome-juku, an old samurai post town that is incredibly picturesque and one of my favorite places I visited! Situated on a slope, this town offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain scenery and features a main street lined with traditional wooden buildings.

8: View over Matsumoto from the tower of Matsumoto Castle ❤️

Matsumoto is a great base if you are planning to explore Nagano or even nearby prefecture Gifu where you can do day trips to. It has the perfect size in order to be walkable anywhere while still having everything you'd desire from a bigger city ☺️

Autumn in Tohoku Guide 🍁🍂 東北の秋 🍁✨

If you’re eager for a real autumn adventure, Tohoku’s mountainous landscape is exactly where you’ll find one!

1. Ouchi-juku, Fukushima 大内宿,福島県 A traditional Edo townscape with buildings that have been preserved, providing an authentic time-travel experience to one of Japan's most culturally rich periods. Similar to Shirakawago with fewer tourists. An hourly bus is departing from Yunokami Onsen Station. 🚌

2. Ginzan Onsen, Yamagata 銀山温泉, 山形県　While being most magical in winter, I highly enjoyed this out of this world onsen village in the mountains of Yamagata. For best experience, try to get a reservation for an overnight stay at one of the ryokan! ❤️

3. + 4. Naruko Gorge, Miyagi 鳴子峡,宮城県 Naruko Gorge is one of the Tohoku region's most scenic gorges located just outside of the small hot spring town of Naruko Onsen. You can reach the Gorge from Nakayamadairaonsen Station and a 30min walk. There is a resthouse where you can enjoy hot Soba and Udon 🍜

5. Yamadera, Yamagata 山寺, 山形県 Climbing the 1015 steps up to the scenic temple grounds of Yamadera is truly a once in a lifetime experience! From the top you will get rewarded with great views down onto the valley. Make sure to try the cherry flavored soft cream from Fumotoya 🍒🍦

6. + 7.. Zao Onsen, Yamagata 蔵王温泉, 山形県 The surroundings of Zao Onsen are rich with mountains and wilderness, and after a ride on one of the cable cars departing from the hot spring village, you will be rewarded with brightly colored leaves 🍁 A bus departs every hour from Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen.

8. + 9. Yamagata City 山形市 Yamagata is the perfect base to delve into North Japan's rich culture, soothing hot springs and soaring mountains. Cherries are famous from Yamagata so make sure to try the local specialties! 🍒 You can get to Yamagata from Tokyo in 2.5hrs by Shinkansen.

10. Yunokami Onsen, Fukushima 湯野上温泉,福島 Yunokami Onsen has long been a favorite therapeutic hot spring village. It's a great base to explore the old Edo village Ouchi-juku and the stunning scenery of the Aizu region in Fukushima 🍁

Chasing autumn views on one of Japan's most scenic train lines 🍁🚃

Known for its stunning scenery, the Tadami Line is a 135.2km-long railway line running between Aizu-Wakamatsu Station in Fukushima Prefecture and Koide Station in Niigata Prefecture. It takes a whopping 4 hours to ride the whole line one way 🤯 The Tadami line was actually suspended for the past 11 years and only resumed service last year 😱

Please see my story highlight on trains to see the complicated journey I made at 5am to get there 😆 I was initially disappointed that I did not get the iconic reflection shot on the water because of the rain, but I actually also really like this mood now ☺️ Would you ride this train line? 🍁

Meet Sakura 🌸, Ashinomaki-Onsen Station's feline in charge in the beautiful region of Aizu in Fukushima 😻

Ashinomaki Onsen is a beautiful tranquil onsen town fighting against being forgotten. In order to attract more visitors, they too on the help of feline station masters. Sakura-chan is the third honorary station master guarding this small station in the beautiful country side of Aizu.

The Aizu rail that frequents here will reward you with stunning views of sakura blossoms and fall foliage on its way! I was seriously stunned how beautiful this area of Fukushima prefecture is. 🥹💕

😸 Sakura-chan has off work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 🫶 Please ask permission first to photograph or film the cats, there might be days where they won't be up for it as they are living breathing animals. There are also times where they are inside the station where it is not allowed to film them. I filmed with my Zoom from very far away when she was outside to not disturb her ☺️

How to get there: a 20min ride on the Aizu rail from Aizu Wakamatsu or a 10min ride from Yunokami Onsen, which is also worth a visit! From Yunokami Onsen, you can also take the bus to the traditional samurai village of Ouchi-juku, making this a perfect day trip! Will you visit this furry station master? 😻

白川郷の秋🍁 Shirakawago in autumn 🍁🌾🛖

If you're wondering if the traditional Gassho-zukuri village is worth a visit in autumn, I would say a resounding yes! A mountain town nestled high in the Japanese Alps, it’s famous for its perfectly preserved gassho farmhouses, with their characteristic sloping thatched roofs 🛖💕

Situated in Gifu Prefecture, Shirakawago gets stunning foliage making it a great destination in autumn! Since this village is most popular in winter, you can enjoy this impossibly picturesque town with fewer tourists in autumn. There are also many festivities happening as the locals prepare the harvest.

📍How to get there: You can reach the village in 40mins by highway bus from Takayama. There are busses going from Matsumoto, Nagoya and Nagano to Takayama in 2-3hrs. Be aware that the bus at Takayama gets super crowded in high season, so queue in advance! If you go, I highly recommend to do a half day in Takayama as well with a similar vibe to Kyoto with fewer tourists 🫶

I woke up in a fairytale 🏮✨

If you're interested in Japan, you have likely heard of Ginzan Onsen, a remote hot spring town in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture. Is the town known as Japan's most beautiful onsen town worth going?

In my opinion, absolutely. Is it touristy? Yes. It's also pretty crowded. But it is also absolutely gorgeous - if you have the option, I would highly recommend to splurge here to stay a night in a ryokan. You need to be quick though, there are on a few ryokan in this tiny town and they fill up months in advance, especially in winter!

There is a daily bus going from Oishida Station every 1-2 hours. The last bus departs around 6pm from Ginzan Onsen and is always the most crowded, so make sure to queue ahead of time (there are only a maximum of 30 seats) For this onsen town to be so incredibly remote it is surprisingly easy to get to!
